JOLTS Report Indicates 6.9 Million Openings, 5.7 Million Seeking Jobs

Major U.S. stock indexes experienced modest gains, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 each up 0.4% and the NASDAQ advancing 0.6%. Tech sector fundamentals and two key reports contributed to today’s gains. The Labor Department’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) for July showed 6.9 million job openings and 5.7 million people currently seeking work. The National Federation of Independent Businesses’ Small Business Optimism Index showed that job creation/openings, capital spending and inventory investment plans all hit their strongest level in August since the 2008 recession.
